Richard Lane

Title: Deputy road test editor

Richard began his career as an automotive journalist in 2011, within weeks finding himself interviewing celebrated Porsche design chief Michael Mauer, even if his dictaphone did fail to record any of it. Things have gone more smoothly since and he joined Autocar in 2017, arriving from Evo.

Given what he loves most is writing about cars he’s driven and the people who made them, the road-test desk suits him well. Assignments range from getting to grips with ropey prototypes on windy airfields to scrutinising the latest models fully signed off for public consumption, plus strapping telemetry gear to the world's fastest cars at MIRA to see how quick they really are compared to rivals – and the maker’s claims. Richard’s writing is also regularly found in our features section, while his face is often seen on our YouTube channel and his voice occasionally heard on the Autocar podcast.

Highlights at Autocar include a class win at the wheel of a Bowler Defender in the British Cross Country Championship, riding shotgun with Walter Röhrl and nursing an Alfa Romeo GTAm over the Bernina Pass on knackered Cup 2 in the depths of winter. He owns an original Ford Focus RS, an eight-valve Delta Integrale and an early Honda Insight, but would probably trade all three for a 997 Carrera GTS (RWD, manual ’box, Clubsport seats).
